The Newsletter of the North Carolina Augmentative Communication Association
President’s Message
By Shelby Kennerly
The NCACA board hopes you are having a great year. The board and committee members have been working tirelessly on ways to build the association. Please share any ideas that you may have about ways to make the association become stronger with any board member.
I sincerely hope everyone was able to attend the 28th Annual North Carolina Augmentative Communication Conference-“Weaving the Threads of Augmentative Communication” in February. Gail M. Van Tatenhove was the keynote speaker. She was outstanding. She spoke on devising curriculum strategies for the systematic development of language and literacy with children using AAC. The conference had 20 breakout sessions related to augmentative communication, literacy, assistive technology, family/consumer issues, and vendor products.
I would like to thank the previous board and committee members for providing two summer programs last year as well as arranging the 28th Annual Conference. Especially, Celeste Helling, past president, Wendi McMillan, conference chair, Leslie Bailey, conference co-chair, Christy Gunter, conference co-chair, Jennifer Tate, programs chair. We would like to express our gratitude to Meridith Hemby Holloway for being treasurer for the past 5 years. The board welcomed April Furr as new president elect and Paula Justice as new treasurer. The board also wishes to thank Page Norris-Mikol for volunteering to take responsibility for writing the newsletter. Please send any articles for the newsletter to her at pmikol@ncatp.org.
During the conference, the Long Range Planning Committee provided information cards to those attending. We had 72 cards returned with suggestions on improving the association. The board and committee members are already using that information to develop next year’s conference, summer workshops, and to strengthen the association.
